“Falling Down the Stairs of Your Smile”

The New Pornographers

Follow that bass line closely, and when the chorus comes to carry you away, let it

“Falling Down the Stairs of Your Smile” has this weird thing that happens with the timing.  The bass line, drums, and vocal lines just don’t quite line up in normal 4/4 time.  The thing is; The New Pornographers just kind of sneak it in and go with it.  They don’t use some in your face, bizarre time signature like an Avant Garde jazz band that most people just pretend to like because its sophisticated.  This song is an understated creation, of sophisticated musicians, that plays like a catchy pop rock song.  My favorite thing about “Falling Down the Stairs of Your Love,” is the way it builds.  It isn’t trying too hard to do anything except groove along, but by the time you hit the break entering the second chorus, this thing is rocking — hard.  Follow that bass line closely, and when the chorus comes to carry you away, let it.
